Making a protein shake in a portable blender without lumps

A protein shake is the recipe where a blender most obviously beats a shaker bottle, and the reason is mechanical rather than about effort. A shaker relies on a wire ball being thrown through the liquid; a blender pushes every part of the mixture through the blades several hundred times in half a minute. This is a single 350 ml serve.
Ingredients
- 250 ml cold water or milk
- 1 scoop (about 30 g) protein powder
- Optional: 1 small banana, or 1 heaped tsp peanut butter
- Optional: a pinch of cinnamon
Step by step
- Liquid first. Pour the water or milk into the empty bottle before the powder goes anywhere near the blades.
- Add the powder. Tip the scoop of powder onto the liquid, not onto dry blades.
- Add anything solid last. Banana, peanut butter or oats go on top of the powder so the powder stays suspended.
- One cycle. Seat the bottle on the base and double-click for a single 30-second cycle.
- Second cycle only if needed. Run one more cycle if you added peanut butter, oats or frozen fruit. Otherwise stop — extra blending only adds foam.
Why shakers leave lumps
Protein powder clumps because the outside of each clump wets first and forms a skin that keeps water out of the middle. A shaker ball breaks the big clumps into smaller ones but cannot do anything about the skin, which is why you get the same fine grit at the bottom of the bottle every time.
A blade assembly running a full cycle shears those clumps apart rather than knocking them around, and the result is uniform. It also means you can use a cheaper powder that does not dissolve well, because dissolving is no longer the mechanism you are relying on.
Order matters more here than anywhere else
Liquid first, always. Powder tipped onto dry blades cakes onto them the moment the first liquid arrives, and once it has caked you are washing it off rather than blending it. Put the milk or water in, then the powder, then anything solid on top.
If you are adding a banana or oats, they go in after the powder, not before. That keeps the powder suspended in the liquid rather than packed against the base while the heavier ingredients grind over it.
How much liquid for one scoop
A standard 30 g scoop wants around 250 ml of liquid to end up drinkable rather than claggy. In a 350 ml bottle that leaves useful room for a banana or a spoon of oats, but not for both plus ice. Pick one addition and the bottle works comfortably.
Water gives the thinnest result and the cleanest flavour. Milk, including oat and soy, makes it noticeably thicker, so if you are using milk start at 220 ml and top up after the first cycle if it is heavier than you want.
One cycle is usually enough
Seat the bottle and double-click for a 30-second cycle. Powder and liquid alone are done in that time; you only need a second cycle if you have added frozen fruit or oats.
Do not blend a protein shake for longer than it needs. Extra cycles fold in air, and a shake full of air foams up the neck of the bottle when you open the cap. If yours has foamed, let it stand for a minute before drinking.
Three variations that fit the bottle
Banana and cinnamon: one small banana and a pinch of cinnamon with vanilla powder. Chocolate and peanut butter: a heaped teaspoon of peanut butter with chocolate powder, blended for two cycles because the butter needs breaking up. Coffee: swap 80 ml of the liquid for cold espresso and skip any other addition.
Whatever you add, keep the total at about two-thirds of the bottle before blending. That is the level at which the contents can circulate; above it they compress instead.
Cleaning up
Protein residue sets hard once it dries, and it sets fastest around the blade housing where the film is thinnest. Rinse within a few minutes of finishing.
Warm water, a drop of dish soap, one 30-second cycle, then unscrew the base and rinse the blade side directly. Dry the two halves separately rather than sealing them wet.
